Welcome to Mpumalanga, the place of the rising sun

A million new experiences awaiting to be discovered

Mpumalanga means ‘the place of the rising sun’ in the local siSwati and Zulu languages, a name it derives from lying on the eastern border of the country.

It is most famous for being the southern gateway to the country’s premier wildlife reserve, the Kruger National Park which is a mere 30-minute drive from the airport via Numbi Gate. It is a place of game, adventure and rich history where visitors are overwhelmed by the experience of spotting the Big 5 in their natural habitat of bush and sub-tropical vegetation, set in fertile valleys and majestic mountains. One breathtaking view after another – that’s South Africa’s Panorama Route, which takes you along the magnificent scenery of God’s Window, Wonder View, the Pinnacle, Bourke’s Luck Potholes and the Three Rondawels.

You will find an array of waterfalls along your journey, which includes the Lisbon Falls, Berlin Falls and Mac Mac Falls, as well as the historical gold rush town of Pilgrim’s Rest. This is also the province where you’ll experience the truly spectacular Blyde River Canyon, the world’s third largest canyon. With awe inspiring vistas around every mountain corner, waterfalls plunging down faces of sheer rock, memories of the gold rush following you as you meander down an endless river canyon, you can’t help walking with your head in the clouds.Blessed abundantly by nature with its rich cultural history, iconic landmarks, unique cuisine, and immense hospitality this is Mpumalanga, South Africa.
